David asked:

I’m an occasional social smoker and rookie singer. I’ve never had the purist most reliable range, but whenever I smoke, I find that I can bridge into those ultra high notes effortlessly. I’m talking 80′s hair metal high. True it’s not a singing habit I would want to maintain. My pronunciation and pitch reliability suffer but not much compared to the nice pure range boost I get. Is it the tar lubing up my vocal folds? Or is it the nicotine deadening the muscles or something? Maybe one of those non-smoke electronic cigarettes would be a good way to go. Please Please Please nothing talking about the health risks of smoking. I wasn’t born yesterday.
